Sixth-graders lend a helping hand

July 31, 2008 - Voorheesville sixth-graders are helping to make the
lives of those less fortunate a little better.
A new health clinic in the Dominican Republic now has more supplies, as
a result of Voorheesville middle school students, their families and
district staff.
This spring, students collected medical supplies such as Tylenol, tape,
gloves, cotton balls, cotton swabs and cartoon character bandages to
pack, sort and eventually send to the clinic.
“This project was special because one of our students, Alana Fiero,
served as the inspiration,” said sixth-grade teacher Sheila Lobel.
“Additionally, Alana was able to share pictures of the village, allowing
students to more fully understand the significance of helping those in
need.”
Last summer, Fiero and her family visited the country to improve the
homes of village residents. When they learned of a young doctor who was
opening a new clinic earlier this spring, they obtained a wish list and
the collections began.
“Before school ended, we were very excited to receive photos of the
clinic, as well as photos of the doctor holding our supplies,” said
Lobel.
Many thanks go out to everyone who donated to this wonderful cause.
