The PTA is active!

The organization raises money for, organizes or supports the following activities and programs:

Activity Nights

Several times each year, activity nights are held for middle school and fifth-grade students.

After Prom Parties

We provide funds to support an after prom party for students, which may include food, activities and raffles.

Character Education Programs

We help pay for character education at all levels. This includes speakers, awards, luncheons and other items specifically geared toward building student's character.

Chess Club

We support chess club at the elementary school and middle school. This gives students the opportunity to learn to play and advance their chess skills.

First Day of School BBQ at the MS/HS

We purchase ice cream for students on the first day of school.

Fun Festival

This is a carnival held at the elementary school where children can buy tickets to play games and win prizes. Games typically include a fishing game, golf putting game, book walk, bean bag toss, basketball foul shot game and more. A bake sale is also held in conjunction with the Fun Festival.

Blackbird Paradise Garden

One of our most recent and proudest additions is our school and community garden. Students, teachers, families, community members, and master gardeners work together to plant, maintain, and harvest this garden. It offers teachers and students (and the rest of us) many opportunities for learning!

Helderberg Workshop

We award scholarships for students to attend one week programs at the Helderberg Workshop during the summer.

Hospitality

The PTA provides refreshments for the fifth- and eighth-grade graduations.

Landscaping

We purchase supplies and flowers for landscaping projects around the schools.

Lego League

We fund a team of middle school students to participate in the FIRST Lego League competition. FIRST is a robotics company that incorporates problem-solving, science and engineering.

Odyssey of the Mind

A problem-solving and creativity competition for Voorheesville students in kindergarten through middle school. Students engage in long term and short term problem solving as groups, and share their results at a regional competition.

Parents as Reading Partners (PARP)

Twice per year, calendars are photocopies and sent home to encourage parents and children in the elementary school to read together for at least 15 minutes each day for 20 days during the month. Parents initial the days they read and prizes (books) are given to those who turn in their completed forms.

Playground Maintenance

We provide funds and volunteers to help maintain the playground at the elementary school.

Resource Library

We provide money for resource books at the elementary and middle schools; books are selected by the school counselors and may be borrowed by parents.

Retirement gifts for staff

We buy gifts for retiring staff to thank them for their service.

School Banking program

We coordinate the school banking program, which encourages students to save money. At the elementary school, school banking day is Tuesday. Middle and high school students make deposits at any First Niagara branch. If you have questions about or are interested in enrolling in the school banking program, please contact our coordinator, Shelly Connolly, at hconnoll@nycap.rr.com or 439-3385.

Science Fair

Elementary school students conduct their own experiments at home and present their findings at the science fair. Volunteer science judges visit each participating child to find out more about their project.

Senior Scholarships

Each year, we award $5,000 in scholarships to high school seniors.

Staff Appreciation Luncheon

We support staff appreciation luncheons with money and volunteers to prepare and serve the luncheon to staff.

Speakers

Administrators and teachers often come to us for help sponsoring speakers to present to students on various topics.

We help schools make many one-time purchases they could not afford to include in the regular school budget.
