Family & Consumer Sciences
Foods I
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
Through lab experiences planning, preparing, serving
and evaluating a wide variety of foods, students will explore
nutritional requirements for people of various ages and needs. They will
learn about the dietary guidelines which promote long term health.
Careers related to food and nutrition will also be explored. This core
course is required for all students seeking a Family and Consumer
Science Sequence.
Foods II
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: Foods I Credit: .5
This course provides more in depth study of concepts
presented in Foods I including food preparation, menu development,
nutrition awareness and application, meal management and meal service. A
unit on food for special events and entertaining completes the course.
Food Science
Grades: 11-12
Prereq.: 2 years of science
Credit: 1
This course is designed as a Family and Consumer
Science electives, as well as non-Regents course for students needing to
obtain one credit of a third science in order to meet the graduation
requirement of three science courses. This course focuses on the
application of chemistry and biology to food preparation, food
processing and nutrition. Some major themes include food additives, food
preservation, metabolism, keeping food safe, fermentation of food, and
enzymes. The course is lab and activity based, with some of the lab
results being edible! Labs are incorporated into class time; there is no
separate lab period.
International Foods
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: Foods I Credit: .5
Through food planning and preparation this course
leads to greater understanding of meal patterns of various countries and
regions. It’s a great opportunity to try new and different foods and
explore the world through food.
Human Development
Grades: 9 12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
Students will learn about themselves, ways of coping
with the problems and stresses they face, and how to deal effectively
with those around them peers, family, younger children and other adults.
Students will also investigate fields of study and career opportunities
in human development. This core course is required for all FCS
sequences.
Child Development
Grades: 10 12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
This course provides study of the physical,
emotional, intellectual and social development of children from
conception to early childhood. Social concerns and identifying and
meeting developmental needs at home and in child care work situations
will be stressed.
Interior Design
Grades:9-12
Prereq: None Credit: .5
This course will enable students to assume the role
of an interior decorator/designer. After studying the various influences
on interior design and the given architectural features of the home, the
student will plan the complete interior design including financing the
project.
